I remember life with a newborn baby was beautiful, fascinating… and quite overwhelming. Some people seem to just glide through it without breaking a sweat, but I was busy just feeding, snuggling, and generally just trying to remember to put on pants each day. If I managed to brush my hair it was a miracle.
I know I’m not alone and I often meet new parents who would love to have newborn photos taken, but just put it off because it feels too big, too much to handle. I also meet new mums who I know would love to have photos of this new love, but wait because they don’t feel ready to put themselves in front of the camera. In the blink of an eye, six months have passed, and then a year, and I see the regret and stress.
Here’s the thing. There is no perfect time. That magical time when you are the perfect weight, your wrinkles disappear and the stars are all aligned won’t come. There is only NOW. It’s not worth putting it off.
I want to make things as easy and painless as possible.
I have put together a welcome guide for my family and newborn sessions, and I’ve had such a great response! In it I go through the whole process of having a session with me – what to think of before, how it will work during the session, and what you can expect after. It includes tips on what to think of when choosing clothes, how I work and my attitude, tips for helping bigger siblings during a newborn session and other bits and pieces.
It feels so good to send this out and I keep hearing how nice it is and how easy it is to relax after looking through it, but I could basically sum it all up in one word:
The aim of the session is to capture ‘you’. Natural, authentic images. Your unique personalities, connection and the love you have for each other. It’s not about perfection and getting magazine-cover ready. Don’t run around cleaning for a week. That will only lead to you being stressed and exhausted for the session.
I tend to not book more than one session per day. Why? Because I give all I can to my clients. I put my heart and soul into my sessions, and especially for newborn sessions, I want to be able to offer my time, patience and flexibility. If you need to feed the baby, feed the baby. If a nappy needs to be changed, I’ll wait.
Natural newborn photography, your way
I don’t do strict posing and will fit in with you and what suits you best. Sometimes I’ll just let you do whatever you would do if I wasn’t there and document the moments as they happen organically. Some people would rather more guidance and then I’ll get you settled in the best light and give you things to talk about or think about to elicit natural expressions.
So, if you’ve been thinking of having a session, don’t wait. Contact me to find out more and see if it feels right for you. I promise you won’t regret it.
Disclaimer: Despite having a brand new baby and three other children, this amazing, sweet mum was so much more together than I’ve ever been. What an incredible morning I had with her and this sweet little guy!
