When I have family sessions, I always keep in mind what parents will want to remember from this age. Things may seem so insignificant at the time, but years from now, when they’re in a totally new phase in life and those days are long gone, it’s easy to get sentimental about the little red truck that was like a lifeline for a while, or the teddy bear that was present every moment.
For this family, this particular summer, it was Lego and Star Wars and playing in the garden. So of course we had to have their session at home. I usually start my sessions with the camera down while I hang out with the kids and let them get used to having me around. When I start taking photos it usually feels pretty natural for them as we just continue with our conversation. It always amazes me how fast kids relax.
We hung out for a while so they could teach me everything they knew about Star Wars before we went and played in the garden. Their garden was full of fruit and berries and they have this really fun game where one sits with their eyes closed, while the other one runs around collecting things. They put something in the other’s mouth and they have to guess what kind of fruit it is. If that’s not trust, I don’t know what is!
